I. Dear friends…

The theme of this week is “Wiki”.

A word in Hawaiian that means ‘quick’, it refers to a library that can be referenced for fast information.

The intent is to make knowledge accessible, and interlinked to better connect people with what they’re looking to learn. In this case, the topic is your campaign world, whether it be published, homebrew, or for personal world-building.

This past week, I ran into a problem of note-taking, and communicating lore to my players. While I’m a big idea guy, those ideas can be hard to get across in individual sessions. A challenge of presentation, yes, but it is also a problem of retention. While players themselves are emboldened to take their own notes (and thank they do), its sometimes more convenient to have a space where everyone is on the same page(s)!

Here are just a few options I’ve looked at these past couple weeks.

Wiki Farms - Platforms that host multiple wikis:

  • Miraheze - Free, with no Ads! Powered by non-profit donations. A platform based on the MediaWiki CMS, and great for those who want a traditional-looking wiki.

  • TiddlyWiki - A non-linear notebook (wiki) for your projects. Can be self-hosted, or hosted for free on TiddlyHost. Lightweight and quick! Best for basic wiki-ing.

  • Fandom or WikiDot - While they are free options for you, I don’t recommend them. Fandom is inundated with Ads, unusable on mobile, and bloated. WikiDot is middle-of-the-road, but apparently is a frequent target of cyberattacks.

  • World Anvil - The current main-steam option for campaigns! An entire management suite with wiki-like articles, interactive maps, historical timelines, white boards, layout/design options, and a ton more! … Some features available for free, while others require a paid subscription with multiple tiers and sizes!

  • Legend Keeper - A solid (paid) alternative to World Anvil. Many of the same features, while looking extra stylish! A short trial is available, but all features are behind a subscription.

  • Obsidian Portal - A long-time platform which has been fun to work with! Nowadays, the Basic plan is super-skim (only 2MB upload? bleh), but solid if you want a no-fuss, mostly text manager. However, the sub starts ~$4-6/month, plus a monthly option, which provides the full feature set.

  • The Goblins Notebook - A scrappy, indie solution to your campaign management. Multi-column style organizing of content. Sharing your campaign details with players requires an Unlimited sub, but its just 2 euro a month, charged monthly.

Self-hosted - For people with hosting or a server! (advanced)

  • DokuWiki - Popular with the dev community; straightforward and versatile! Both a great option for those who want a no-frills wiki, and those who want to add a number of templates and options for expansion.

  • MediaWiki - For those who want a Wikipedia-like experience for their campaign. Its the most Wiki a Wiki can Wiki! Also a number of quality-of-life expansions available. (←what I chose, because I’m a nerd)

  • OddMuse - Old-school and not the prettiest, but great for basic functionality and reading. Light-weight option.

  • Obsidian.md - A note-taking tool, touted as a “second brain”, and an app that has become super popular recently. I use it a ton for my personal notes. While not a public-facing-safe wiki out of the gate, there are a LOT of plugins, and capability to forge it into what you need it to be if you’re savvy enough!

Do you have any specific tools you’ve had a great experience with? Any thoughts on the above options? Feel free to drop your comment below.

II. The Sage Speaks

Continuing the saga of populating the Odd Fair Press TTRPG Glossary.

Here are this weeks terms:

  • Metagaming - A players use of real-life knowledge concerning the state of the game to determine their next action. Often seen as exploiting the game by ignoring the necessary boundary between player and character.

  • Experience Points (XP) - Metric to determine the amount of experience a player character has from their past adventures, usually calculated from individual actions, battles, and accomplishments each represented with a numerical value. Upon reaching a specific sum of XP, a character may gain a level.

  • Crowd Control - Attacks, spells, and effects designed to manipulate the actions, placement, or movement of enemies in order to better control the terms of the encounter. (pushing enemies away, pulling them close, stunning a group, etc)

  • Dump Stat - A low-value character attribute accepted in order to allow for better values in other attributes. For example, placing an Intelligence stat at a very low number so a player can afford to max out their Strength stat.

  • Total Party Kill (TPK) - When an entire adventuring party is defeated and killed during a session. This situation often occurs as the result of a no-win scenario, a deadly encounter, a series of terrible consecutive rolls, or exceedingly bad decisions made by player characters.
