I. A Glimpse from the Editor
Greetings, Dungeon Delvers!
Tis the month of May; a majestic time of springtime frolic, and sunlit scenery. And boy how I’ve been getting my fill. Garage sales, friendly outings, and even the May Day parade! … Time to open the windows and clear out the stale air. The ad-hoc tales of the thief, sage, and paladin also take a walk in the breeze today.
Speaking of May Day parade, I’m delighted to show you this video of the Minneapolis May Day Parade from just a couple days ago!
Here is a quick world-building prompt, my friends:
“What kind of parades, celebrations, or festivals take place in your world? What manner of cultures come together to celebrate? How are they clothed? What kind of colorful costumes? What contraptions, vehicles, floats, or other large structures make up this celebration?"
Also, a fun tidbit:
I will be working for Envoy as a demo game master for Darrington Press’s “Daggerheart” at GenCon 2025!
If you’re attending Gen Con this year, there’s a chance you can catch me running games. Of course, they wont have me listed on the site, but if you’re interested in a demo from one of the esteemed GMs, you can sign up here.

Theory and Design Advice
Trying to design a mystery, but need help? Consider the Literary Mercenary’s advice about starting from the middle of the onion.

Over on , the word is dynamic sandboxes, and how to plan a world with key series of events that continue on their journey through time even if the party isn’t present. Your world has to live on its own, y’know!
A Maniacs Insight (Where I quote an adjacent Substack blog)
I have told a lot of this anecdote before when I was explaining why resource management makes players interact with the game world more. But today I am broaching a different topic - the very nature of AD&D and, arguably, old school games.
I am far from the first to point out this fact, but old school RPGs are resource management games. Indeed, they are much more resource management games than they are war games.
